Painted in 1847 by the French artist Alexandre Cabanel at just 24 years old during his time at the Villa Médicis in Rome, this oil on canvas masterpiece captures the immediate aftermath of Lucifer's expulsion from Heaven.
The central figure is a strikingly beautiful, nude winged angel, Lucifer himself, reclining on rocky ground, his muscular body rendered with classical perfection reminiscent of ancient Greek sculpture. His arms are crossed protectively in front of his face, partially shielding it, while a single large tear rolls down his cheek, blending anguish, wounded pride, and simmering rage in his red-rimmed eyes. Fiery red hair whips in an unseen wind, emphasizing his defiant yet vulnerable state.
Above him, in the pale blue sky, serene angels float gracefully, their forms distant and ethereal, symbolizing the ongoing glory of divine order from which he has been cast out. The contrast is stark: the fallen one's dark, grounded isolation against the luminous, harmonious heavens.
Cabanel's work transforms the biblical and Milton-inspired theme of the rebel angel into a profoundly romantic figure, heroic, tragic, and achingly human in his beauty and emotion, making it one of the most iconic and provocative depictions of Lucifer in 19th-century art.
The painting is now housed at the Musée Fabre in Montpellier, France.
